Walter
Walter
(m) Gaelic Bhàtar. An Old German name, com-
posed of elements meaning ‘rule’ and ‘folk.’
The Scottish
Royal Family of Stuart descended from a Walter, but
the name is naturally associated with the Scotts. The Border clan
used the name for generation after generation, and Sir Walter
Scott (1771-1832) made it world famous. Walter has been a popular
name in Scotland. It was ranked 17th in 1858, but by 1958 it had
dropped to 68th place. For the moment Scottish parents are making
little use of the name, though it seems hardly
conceivable that it should cease to be a living name in
Scotland.
