Visit
Scotland
Clines Bernhardt Tour, March, 2006
A
short 2 person Travel Agent tour of Scotland which commenced
on Wednesday, March 15th, 2006, at Edinburgh International Airport.
March is not the best month to visit Scotland, and March 2006
was unusually cold and wintery with deep snow throughout Perthshire
and most all of Northern Scotland. Nevertheless this pair of
undaunted US Travel Agents were able to learn a lot about Scotland,
and Tours of Scotland, during their visit.
Day
1:
Group arrived at Edinburgh Airport around 9am and we travelled
first to South Queensferry to view the famous road
and rail bridges
which span the River Forth. From South Queensferry we travelled
over the Forth Road Bridge and North to the ancient village
of Abernethy,
with its famed Pictish Tower.
After lunch in Abernethy we continued North to Highland
Perthshire and the beautiful and historic town of Dunkeld
where the group booked into the Atholl
Arms Hotel overlooking the River
Tay. We then took a short drive North to Pitlochry
and Edradour
before returning to Dunkeld.
Day
2:
After a full Scottish Breakfast we booked out of the Atholl
Arms Hotel and`drove South from Dunkeld, through North Fife,
along the South
Bank of the River Tay, to St
Andrews, stopping briefly to view jet fighters that just
happened to be landing
at Leuchars Air Base as we drove by. ( You never know what you
are going to see as you drive around Scotland ! ) Since it was
raining heavily in St Andrews we drove down to the East Neuk
of Fife and visited the beautiful fishing
villages of St Monans,
Anstruther
and Pittenweem. After our
tour of the East Neuk of Fife we booked into, and dined, at
the Craws
Nest Hotel. The Craws Nest Hotel is perfectly located for
Golfing Fife; including the Old
Course at St Andrews, Balcomie
Links, Lundin
Links, Ladybank,
Scotscraig,
Kingsbarns
Golf Links, St
Andrews Bay and more.
Day
3:
After a full Scottish Breakfast we drove 5 miles North East
to the picturesque village of Crail,
and Crail
Golfing Society. Returning to St
Andrews, where the weather was now cold, but sunny, we visited
the Old
Golf Course, St
Andrews Cathedral, and drove through the ancient
streets. From St Andrews we drove North across the River
Tay through Dundee
and back to Dunkeld where we booked in, and dined at the Atholl
Arms Hotel.
Day
4:
After
a full Scottish Breakfast we
drove West to Dunblane
where we visited Dunblane
Cathedral, before heading to the city of Stirling
to visit Stirling
Castle. From Stirling we drove East to Dollar for lunch,
and then viewed Castle
Campbell, one of my favourite Castles. From Dollar we drove
South through Fife
to the ancient village of Culross,
and then further along the River
Forth to North Queensferry, a small village which nestles
under the Forth
Railway Bridge. From North Queensferry we crossed the Forth
Road Bridge, and booked into The
Quality Hotel, Edinburgh Airport, the ideal location for
the early flight next morning back to the USA.
