Threave Castle

This mighty tower of the Black Douglases stands on a lonely islet in the River Dee. It was built towards the end of the fourteenth century by Archibald the Grim, third Earl of Douglas and Lord of Galloway. The tower, which is four storeys high, is enclosed by an outer wall, with round towers loop-holed for firearms. This dates from 1513, in the crisis that followed Flodden. The castle was dismantled after its capture by the Covenanters in 1640.
Located one and a half miles west of Castle Douglas. Access by farm road from road to Gatehouse of Fleet.
