Torquil
Torquil
(m) A Torquil was founder of the MacLeods of
Lewis, and the name is much used by that clan. It represents an
adaptation into English of the Gaelic Torcall/Torcaill, itself
a form of a Norse name which has various modern forms, e.g., Torkel,
Torkell, Torkild, Torkjell, Terkel. The first part of the name
is Thor; the second element is obscure. Torquil is little used
in Scotland but somehow manages to have an aristocratic ring to
it. There is a character who bears this name in Scott’s
Fair Maid of Perth (1828).
