Timothy
Timothy
(m) Greek, ‘honour God.’ This was used in
Scotland and in Ireland as a substitute for the native
Tadhg, which means ‘poet’ or ‘philosopher’
(c.f. Mac Caig,
‘son of Tadhg’). Thaddeus was also used to anglicise
this
name, but Timothy is now common. Use of Timothy in
Scotland may well have been influenced by its Irish
usage.
The
name began to be used in significant numbers
in Scotland, as well as in England and Wales, around 1960. It
has been used in the late 1970’s, but does not seem destined
to become one of the more fashionable names.
