Stella
Stella
(f) Latin, ‘star.’ Estelle, the French form of the
name, is also occasionally used. Roman Catholics might
well have the Virgin Mary in mind when giving this name
to their daughters, for one of her titles is Stella mans,
‘star of the sea.’ The name also has many literary
as-
sociations, especially in the writings of Sir Philip Sidney
(1554-86) and Jonathan Swift (1667-1745). Stella is
regularly used in Scotland, but it has never been one of the more
fashionable names.
