Stanley
Stanley
(m) This common English placename, meaning
a ‘stony meadow,’ became a surname, then a Christian
name. The explorer Stanley found Dr Livingstone in 1871, which
brought the name very much into the news.
Stanley Baldwin became prime minister much later, but he
received his name in 1867. By 1900 Stanley was a common Christian
name throughout Britain, and it remained in fashion for a generation.
In Scotland the name was in 43rd position in 1935, but it then
faded away.
