Witch Grizzie
In St. Monans in Fife a tale is told of the trial of Witch Grizzie.
In the 15th century she was found guilty of causing deaths by
incantation. She was sentenced to be burnt at the stake but during
the interval preceding the execution they allowed Witch Grizzie
to fall asleep. The very instant her eyelids came into contact
with each other she vanished into the shape of a droning beetle.
Grizzie never again appeared in human shape but her prosecutors
were constantly infested with a droning noise in their ears. Since
this event, no witch, after condemnation, was allowed to fall
asleep.
