Simon
Simon
(m) A form of the Hebrew Shimeon, ‘God has
heard.’ Simeon is an alternative form. Historically it is
associated with the Frasers. The Chief of Clan Fraser of
Lovat is styled MacShimi, ‘son of Simon.’ Simon was
formerly a much-used name in Scotland, together with its
pet forms Sim, Sime, Sym, Syme, Simmie. These gave rise to many
surnames, such as Simpkins, Simpson and Simson. In more recent
times Simon has been im-
mensely popular in England and Wales, but it has been
quietly used in Scotland in the late 1970’s. Some of the
surnames deriving from the name, such as Simpson, are
occasionally used as Christian names in Scotland.
