Sheila
Sheila
(f) Also Sheelagh, Sheelah, Sheilagh,
Shelagh, Shiela. These are phonetic forms of the Scottish
and Irish Sue, itself a form of Celia. Sheila was popular
in England and Wales from 1920-55. In Scotland it
reached i5th position in 1935, then fell to 32nd place in 1958.
It has continued to be used by Scottish parents in the late 1970’s,
but appears to be rapidly going out of fashion.
