VACH

VERE
Originally Weir or Were - a fish dam. The family are descended from Rotaldus Were of Blackwood in Lanarkshire, 1404.

VEITCH, John (1829-94) of Peebles. Author. Professor of Logic and Rhetoric at St Andrew's (1860). His works include Tweed and other Poems (1848), Lives of Dugal Stewart (1857) and Sir W. Hamilton (1869).

VEITCH, William (1794-1885) of Spittal near Jedburgh. Classical scholar. His chief work was the invaluable Greek Verbs Irregular and Defective (1848). Fourth edition in 1878.

VEITCH, William (1885-1968) of Edinburgh. Director of Kemsley Newspapers (1937-57). VEITCH, William L.D. (1901-69) of Edinburgh. Major-General. Com-manded the Bengal Sappers and Miners (1943-46). Was Engineer-in-Chief, Pakistan Army (1950-53).

VIPONT
The family are of Norman origin, the Scottish branch being descended from William de Veteri Ponte, 1165. The name has been corrupted to Wepont.
