IMRIE, Sir John D. (1891-) of Kinross ? Educ. Edinburgh. Chartered Accountant. Local Govt. Commissioner, West Indies (1951-53).

INCHCAPE, (Kenneth J. W. Mackay) 3rd Earl, (1917-). Director, P & 0 Steam Nav. Co., The Chartered Bank, Royal Exch. Assurance, Burma Oil Co., B.P. Oil Co., Commonwealth Development Finance Co., etc. Appointed Chairman P & 0 in 1973.

An Englishman. The family are descended from Sir William Inglis, temp. Robert III.

INNES
Local: from the lands of Innes in Elginshire. The family are descended from Berowaldus Flandrensis who obtained a grant of the lands of Innes in 1153.

Innes, Cosmo (1798-1874) of Deeside. Antiquary, historian and editor. Author of Scotland in the Middle Ages (1860) and Sketches of Early Scottish History (1861).

Innes, Lewis (1651-1738) of Banffshire. Became Principal of the Scots College, Paris. INNES, Thomas (1662-1744) ofAboyne, Aberdeenshire. Historian and antiquary. Became Vice-Principal of Scots Coll., Paris. Wrote Critical Essay on the Ancient Inhabitants of the Northern Parts of Britain (1729).

Innes, Sir Thomas of Learney, (1893-). Lord Lyon King of Arms and Sec. to the Order of the Thistle (1946-69). Published many articles on Scots Heraldry, history and peerage law.

INVERCLYDE, Sir John Burns, 1st Baron (1829-1901) of Glasgow. One time chairman of the Cunard Steamship Co. INVERCLYDE, Sir George A. Burns, 2nd Baron (1861-1905) of Glas-gow. Followed his brother John as Chairman of the Cunard Steamship Co.

INVERFORTH, Sir Andrew Weir, 1st Baron (1865-1955). Shipowner. Surveyor-General, Supply, War Office, and member of the War Council (1917-19).

INVERFORTH, Sir Andrew A. M. Weir, 2nd Baron, (1897-). Chair-man and Managing Director of Andrew Weir & Co. Ltd

IRELAND
A native of Ireland. The family are descendded from Sir John de Ireland of Lancashire, temp. William the Conqueror.

IRVINE
Local: from the town of Irvine in Ayrshire, which is situate on the river Irvine, originally Iar avon or west river. The family are descended from "William de Irwin, armour bearer to Robert Bruce, who received from that king a grant of the forest of Drum, and his own arms, when Earl of Carrick, viz: "three holly leaves."

Irvine, James Colquhoun (1877-1952) of Glasgow. Chemist. Became famous for his researches in carbohydrate chemistry.

IRVING, David (1778-1860) of Langholm. Biographer, librarian and editor. In 1820 was appointed Principal Librarian of the Faculty of Advocates.

IRVING, David B. (1903-) of Ayrshire. Chairman, London Electricity Board (1956-58), British Electricity Development Assoc. (1960-61) and Power Division IEE (1962-63).

IRVING, Edward (1792-1834) of Annan, Dumfriesshire. From 1822 till his death he was one of the most notable preachers in London (Scotch Church in Hatton Garden and a new church in Regent Sq.). A man of striking appearance and fine voice.

IRVING, John (1920-) of Hamilton? Professor of Natural Philosophy. Senior lecturer in applied mathematics, Univ. of Southampton (1951-59). Prof. and Head of Dept. of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, Univ. of Cape Town (1959-61).

IRVING, Washington (1783-1859), born in New York, son of a Scottish emigrant. Essayist and historian. The Sketch Book (1819) which contained 'Rip Van Winkle' and 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' was a great success. His crowning work was the Life of Washington (1855-59).

ISAACS, Alick (1921-67) of Glasgow. Virologist and discoverer of Interferon in 1952.

IVORY, James (1765-1842). A brilliant Scottish mathematician who won considerable fame in his day.
