Scottish
Prisons

An
anecdote illustrative of the condition of Scottish prisons long
ago was given by Lord Cockburn in his famed
“Journal:”
”
We have had good specimens of the present condition of some prisons.
One man was tried at Inver ness for prison-breaking, and his defence
was that he was ill-fed, and that the prison was so weak that
he had sent a
message to the jailer that if he did not get more meat he would
not stay another hour, and so he left.”
