Sauchie Tower

Sauchie Tower

New Sauchie, near Alloa

Suachie is an almost square tower of 15th century construction within a ruined courtyard in which 17th century and later buildings have been erected. Sauchie was for a long time the seat of the family of Shaw, or Schaw, whose name continues in nearby Schawpark. By marriage in 1420, the Shaws acquired the property from a family named Annand. James Schaw of " Salquhy " had a letter from the king in 1480, in the Exchequer of Rolls. He was Tutor to the young James the Fourth. The Schaws were masters of the King's Wine-Cellar, and their arms show three covered cups.
