Rebecca
Rebecca
(f) Also Rebekah. A Biblical name from a
Hebrew word of doubtful etymology. Scott’s beautiful
Jewess in Ivanhoe (1819) is Rebecca; he also uses the
name for characters in Guy Mannering (1815) and The
Antiquary (18i6). Rebecca (Becky) Sharp in Thackeray’s
Vanity Fair (1847-8) is also one of the most famous
characters in English literature.
The
name was most used in Scotland in the nineteenth century. Its
recent return to favour in England and Wales does not as yet seem
to have impressed Scottish parents.
