Small Group Tours Of Scotland

Photography Tour of Scotland

A Photography Tour of Scotland which commenced on Monday, June 27th, 2005. This short tour of Scotland, consisting of nine group members, and Tom and Pat Cory, the two group leaders, was based out of the Highland Perthshire town of Dunkeld and the old coaching Inn, The Royal Dunkeld Hotel. The photographs on this web page were taken by Scottish Tour Guide, Mr Sandy Stevenson, and are simply a basic record of the tour.

Monday - Day 1:
After a delayed arrival at Edinburgh Airport, at 4.00pm, we crossed the Forth Road Bridge and drove directly North through Fife and Perthshire to Dunkeld. After settling into the The Royal Dunkeld Hotel we visited the Lower Newtyle Fishing Beat, in Birnam, for a quick photography session on the banks of the River Tay. Our host at Lower Newtyle Fishing Beat was John Monteith, a local man, and a Scottish Ghillie who is an expert with a salmon fishing rod. Returning to the village of Birnam we had dinner amidst live Scottish Music at the Tap Inn.

Tuesday - Day 2:
After breakfast we drove South into the Kingdom Of Fife stopping briefly at Lindores Loch where we met one of the avid trout fishermen from the area. From Lindores we drove South to the East Neuk of Fife and the coastal village of St Monans. After a photography session at St Monans Church and Harbour we lunched on Pittenweem Haddock at the Craws Nest Hotel in Anstruther before visiting the adjacent fishing village of Pittenweem. Since the coastal area was extremely misty we decided to drive to North Fife and the South bank of the River Tay. On the road we stopped briefly for a break and a cup of tea at the Fernie Castle Hotel, and then drove to old Creich Church, before visiting the ancient village of Newburgh. In Newburgh we photographed the old boats laid up by the edge of the river. From Newburgh we crossed into Perthshire where we visited Abernethy village with its Pictish Tower and then drove south west to visit ruined Balvaird Castle. Dinner then followed at The Famous Bein Inn in Glenfarg.

Wednesday - Day 3:
After breakfast we drove West to Glen Almond, just off the Sma Glen, where we photographed Craignavar a ruined Highland village lying hidden and deserted on a south facing raised terrace on the slopes of this beautiful glen. From the Sma Glen we drove East to Amulree and through Glen Quaich to the Highland Village of Kenmore situated on Loch Tay (Gaelic Loch Tatha) which runs southwest-northeast from Killin to Kenmore, and is overlooked by Ben Lawers. Its irregular shape is due to displacement of the central part along the Loch Tay geological fault.. After lunch in Kenmore we drove West to Fearnan and then through beautiful Glenlyon (Gaelic Gleann Liobhunn) up to Ben Lawers. Returning back through Glenlyon we met a Drystone Dyker whose job it is to hand-build many of the beautiful stone walls seen throughout the Glen. Dinner then followed at the Riverside Inn in Grandtully.

Thursday - Day 4:
After breakfast we drove South through heavy rain to the the village of Dunning to view and photograph the famous Dupplin Cross at St Serfs Church. From Dunning we headed South to Dollar to visit Castle Campbell which is wonderfully situated in Dollar Glen. After lunch and a long photography session at Castle Campbell we drove North to Glenfarg to visit the village green. Dinner then followed at The Famous Bein Inn in Glenfarg.

Friday - Day 5:
After breakfast the group visited Dunkeld Cathedral and walked around both Dunkeld and Birnam. After lunch we drove the short distance to both view and photograph the scenery and falls at the Dunkeld Hermitage. Late in the afternoon I took the two group leaders on a short tour of Loch Tummel and the River Tummel, viewing Highland Cows along the way. Dinner then followed at the Royal Dunkeld Hotel.

Saturday - Day 6:
After breakfast we drove to Edinburgh Airport.
