(m) Greek, ‘lover of horses’. A name which has
been quietly popular in Scotland this century. In former
times in Fife, local pronunciation of the name led to the
surname Philp. Philip was well used in England and Wales
in the 1960’s but it has subsequently fallen away. Feminine
forms of the name used in Scotland include Philippa (Pippa) and
Philippe.
