Pauline
Pauline
(f) This is the normal feminine form of Paul,
though Paula and Paulette are also used by Scottish
parents. Pauline also occurs occasionally as Pauleen or
Paulene. Pauline was very fashionable in England and
Wales around 1950. It seems to have reached Scotland
rather later. In 1958 it was 55th most frequently used
name, and a 1975 count shows it to be still in favour.
In other English-speaking countries Paula (originally a
German feminine form much used in Germany in the
nineteenth century) is replacing Pauline.
