Nine
Wenches - Edinburgh, July 10th 1736

Yesterday
nine wenches of the town made an ‘amende honourable’
through the several streets of the city, the hangman attending
them, and drums beating to the tune of ‘Cuckolds-come-dig.’
Seven of them were afterwards sent to the House of Correction.
They were very naked and meagre beings, and fools into the bargain,
for driving a trade which afforded neither food nor raiment.
