Mungo
Mungo
(m) See Kentigern. In J. I. M. Stuart’s novel
Mungo’s Dream the hero is named, we are told, ‘because
there’s a Mungo Lockhart in a Scottish poem my father’s
said to have been rather proud of.’ The poem is William
Dunbar’s Lament. Mungo ‘amiable,’ was the nickname
of
St Kentigern, patron saint of Glasgow, and the name is
still used especially in that area. The noted Scottish
explorer Mungo Park (1771-1806) has also helped to make the name
well known.
