Moniaive, Scotland

Moniaive in Dumfrie is where three streams meet in the vicinity of the village to form the Cairn Water. The village Cross dates from 1638, and there is a monument to James Renwick, the last Covenanter martyr, who died in 1688. 3 miles East South East is Maxwelton House, carrying the date 1641, but altered and modernised, and long the seat of the Laurie family, being well known as the one-time home of the heroine of “Annie Laurie.”

To the south-west of the house is the little village of Kirkland, and also Glencairn Church, where Annie Laurie and her husband are said to be buried. West of Moniaive, off the Carsphairn road, is Craigdarroch, built by William Adam in 1729, with its lovely gardens. It was once the married home of Annie Laurie, and where she died.
