(f) This is usually explained as a pet form of Mary,
Margaret, etc, though in Scott’s Redgauntlet (1824) a girl
called Dorcas is addressed as ‘my fair May,’ May being
used in its obsolete sense of ‘maiden.’ It was later
sociated with the name of the month, and may have in-
fluenced the use of April, Avril and June. May was most
popular in Scotland at the turn of the century.
