May (f) This is usually explained as a pet form of Mary,
Margaret, etc, though in Scott’s Redgauntlet (1824) a girl
called Dorcas is addressed as ‘my fair May,’ May being
used in its obsolete sense of ‘maiden.’ It was later as-
sociated with the name of the month, and may have in-
fluenced the use of April, Avril and June. May was most
popular in Scotland at the turn of the century.
