Marlene
Marlene
(f) In modern times the use of this name has
been almost entirely due to Marlene Dietrich (c. 1904- ),
and to the wartime song, Lili Marlene. Miss Dietrich
was born Maria Magdalena, and the stage name blended
them. However, Charlotte Yonge (History of Christian
Names) had already listed Marlena as a pet form of
Magdalena in the nineteenth century. Marlene was most
used in Scotland in the 1950’S. A variant Marlyn was
also introduced. See also Arlene.
