Marion (f) A diminutive form of Mary. The Scottish
Registrar General’s count placed it in 13th position in
1858, 16th in 1935, 28th in 1958. It has subsequently
gone out of fashion. The spelling Marian is sometimes
used (in 1958 Scottish parents used Marion 450 times,
Marian 33 times). Other variants include Marianne,
Marieanne, Mariona, Marnion. Marion is used by Gaelic
speakers as a substitute for Mor or Morag.
