Lundin Links
Map
of this area
A
few yards from the main road, in full view of the windows of the
modern villas of the popular golfing resort of Lundin Links near
Largo, stand three mysterious stones-the Standing Stones of Lundin.
Haunting memorials of the remote past, they sprout-grotesque,
15-feet high rocky plants-from the soft grassland. Bare they are,
with no carving, no inscription to reveal the mystery of their
erection, They have been described as the gravestones of Danish
chieftains who fell on this coast to the swords of Macbeth and
Banquo. But this is an unlikely theory, and they are believed
to be relics of a more ancient time than that. These stark and
savage outlines surely belong to the very dawn of man. Their resemblance
to the cromlechs found in other Celtic regions and the discovery
nearby of ancient sepulchres indicate that they might be the remains
of some temples of the Druids or sun-worshippers. At Lundin Links
is a romantic 14th-century tower, all that remains of the baronial
mansion of the family of Lundin.
