Lee
Lee
(in, f) This is a surname derived from a common
placename which has a variety of original meanings, such
as ‘wood,’ ‘clearing,’ ‘pasture.’
In Scotland it is used as a
Christian name for both girls and boys, and is no longer
thought of as a transferred surname. In England and Wales there
is a tendency to spell the girls’ name as Leigh, perhaps
in allusion to the actress Vivien Leigh (1913-67). The use of
the name for boys began in the U.S.A., probably in honour of General
Robert E. Lee (1807-70).
