(f) Also Ken, Kerrie. Very much a name of the
1970’S in Scotland. In spite of its obvious associations
with Ireland (the county of Kerry originally being that of
Giar’s people), Kerry seems to have come from Australia.
As Kerrie it was already being intensively used there in the 1940’s,
at first both for girls and boys. Subsequently it became a girls’
name only. Presumably the name was
first used as a conscious borrowing from the Irish place-
name, but a phonetic confusion with Carrie, the pet form
of Caroline, etc., has been suggested.
