June
June
(f) Like April, this month name was first used in
Britain as a Christian name in the 1920’s. The idea seems
to have been imported from France, where Avril was
being used (French ‘April’). June was 35th most frequently
used name in Scotland in 1935, 31st in 1958. It is now little
used. Month names have been more used in Scotland this century
than in any other English-speaking country. The existence of May,
as a pet form of names such as Mary rather than the name of the
month, may have had some influence.
