Julia
Julia,
Julie (f) Gaelic Sileas. Julie has been the more
usual form of this name in Scotland in recent times.
Both Julia and Julie are feminine forms of Julius, a
Roman clan name said to mean ‘downy,’ or as Camden
(Remains Concerning Britain) translated it, ‘mossy bearded.’
Julie is often in fashion in Scotland. The diminutives Juliet,
Juliette and Julienne are occasionally used. The male form of
the name, Julian, seems to be little used in Scotland.
