(f) A feminine form of John, long popular in
Scotland. it was the 14th most frequently used name in
1858, 8th in 1935, 21st in 1958. Since then it appears to
have fallen out of favour. Between 1925 and 1950 the
name became immensely popular in the U.S.A. and Canada, and also
in England and Wales. The diminutive Jeanie is often used as an
independent name. Jeanna, Jeanne and Jeannie also occur. The Gaelic
form is Sine.
