Jane
Jane
(f) A feminine form of John which has had a long
run of popularity in Scotland. It was the 5th most
frequently used girls’ name in 1858, 13th in 1935, 18th
in
1958. Since then the downward trend has continued. The
Gaelic version is Sine, but this is often rendered phoneti-
cally as Sheena, Sheenagh, Sheenah, Shena, Sheona or Shiona. The
spelling Jayne is now not unusual, and
Jaine is an occasional variant.
