Ivor
Ivor
(m) Gaelic Iomhair. The Norse personal name
Ivarr was formerly used in Scotland, leading to surnames
such as Maclver, Macivor, Maccure. As the late Ivor
Brown, a well-known student of words and names, ex-
pressed it: ‘My native county of Aberdeenshire once had
a share in the strong Scandinavian linguistic infiltration which
has had a permanent influence on the customs and vocabulary of
the Orkney and Shetland islands.’ Gunther
Drosdowski connects the Norse Ivarr with Ingvar, which
contains the name of a god of unknown etymology. The
regular occurrence in Ayrshire of the male name Ivey, Ivie or
Ivy is probably originally connected with a pet form of Ivor.
