Iona

Iona

Iona (f) The name of this famous Hebridean island,
where St Columba founded his monastery in 563, is used
from time to time as a girls’ Christian name. Ivor Brown
remarks perceptively in his Charm of Names: ‘the smaller
islands have been taken up for Christian names on their
merits of appearance when one sees them and of music
when one hears them.’
