Inga
Inga
(f) One of the Scandinavian names used in the
Shetlands and still kept alive by Scottish parents. It is a
short form of many other names, including Ingeborg,
Ingegard and Ingrid. It derives ultimately from the name
of an Icelandic god, Yngvi. Ingrid (‘Yngvi’ and ‘beauty’)
is also used in Scotland, but in this case the fame of
the Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman (1917- ) probably
has more influence than traditional ties with Scandinavia.
