Important Battles Fought On Scottish Soil

84 AD Mons Graupius. An army of Roman legionaries and
auxiliaries under Agricola defeated a large force of
Caledonian Picts, led by Calgacus.

937 Brunanburh. A combined force of Scots (led by
Constantine II), Strathclyde Britons (led by Owin) and
Norsemen (led by Olaf) were defeated by an English army
under the command of Aethelstan.

1018 Carham. Malcolm II, supported by Owin of Strathclyde, defeated Adulf Cadel, Earl of Northumbria.
1040 Pitgaveney Macbeth secured a victory over the army of Duncan I. Duncan I was killed.

1057 Lumphanan. Macbeth was slain in battle against an army led by Malcolm, son of Duncan 1.

1093 Ainwick The Scots, led by Malcolm III were attacked after laying siege to Alnwick. The English. Led
by Robert de Mowbray, defeated them. Malcolm III was
killed.

August 22, 1138 Battle of the Standard. The Scots, led by David I, were heavily defeated by an English army
assembled by Thurstan, Archbishop of York.

1263 Largs. A force led by King Haakon of Norway was forced into retreat by the Scots under Alexander III.

September 11, 1297 William Wallace led an army to
victory against the English led by John de Warrenne, Earl of Surrey.

July 22, 1298 Falkirk. Scots led By William Wallace were
defeated by an English army led by Edward 1.

June 18, 1306 Methven An English force led by Aymer de
Valence, Earl of Pembroke, defeated Bruce’s army after taking them by surprise.

May 10, 1307 Loudon Hill. The Scots led by Robert the Bruce defeated an English army led by Aymer de Valence.
June 24, 1314 Bannockburn The English army, led by Edward II, were defeated by the Scots, led by Robert the Bruce.

August 12, 1332 Dupplin Moor. The Scots, led by the Earl of Mar, were defeated by an English army, led by Edward Balliol.

July 13, 1333 Halidon Hill. The Scots, led by Sir Archibald
Douglas, were defeated by the English under the command of Edward III and Edward Balliol.

October 17, 1346 Neville’s Cross. An English army, led by the Archbishop of York and Sir Henry Percy, defeated the Scots army and captured King David II.

August 19, 1388 Otterburr.i The Scots secured a victory over the English, led by Sir Henry Percy. In the course of the battle, the Scots leader, James Douglas the 2nd Earl
of Douglas, was killed.

September 13, 1402 Homildon Hill. The Scots army, led by Archibald, 4th Earl of Douglas, were defeated by an English army led by Sir Henry Percy and the Earl of
March.

June 11, 1488 Sauchieburn James III was defeated in battle against a force of rebellious nobles, who had rallied the support of his son. After the battle, the king was
murdered.

September 9, 1513 Flodden James IV led the Scots into battle against an English army under the command of the Earl of Surrey. The Scots were heavily defeated
and James was killed.

November 24, 1542 Solway Moss. The Scots were defeated by an English army led by Lords Wharton and Musgrave.

February 12 1545 Ancrum Moor. An English army led by Sir Ralph Eure was defeated by the Scots, led by the Earl of Angus.

September 10, 1547 Pinkie. The Duke of Somerset led the
English against a Scots army under the command of the Earl of Arran. The Scots were heavily defeated.

May 14, 1569 Langside. The army of Mary, Queen of Scots was defeated by an army under the command of the Regent Moray.

September 1, 1644 Tippermuir. James Graham, Marquis of
Montrose led a royalist army to victory against Covenanting forces under the command of Lord Elcho.

September 13, 1644 Aberdeen. James Graham, Marquis of
Montrose, led the Royalists to victory against Lord Burleigh’s army.

February 2, 1645 Inverlochy. A royalist force led by James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, defeated an army of Covenanters led by Campbell of Glenlyon.

May 9, 1645 Auldearn. The Marquis of Montrose secureda victory for the royalists against an army led by Sir John Hurry. The royalists led by the Marquis of Montrose defeated the Covenanters, led by General Baillie.

July 2, 1645. Kilsyth. Montrose’s royalist army defeated
the covenanting army led by General Baillie.

September 13, 1645 General David Leslie led a surprise
attack on the army of John Graham, Marquis of Montrose
and defeated them.

September 9, 1650 The army of Oliver Cromwell
defeated the Scots led by General David Leslie.

November 26, Rullion Green. 1666 A body of Covenanters was heavily defeated by a force led by Thomas Dalziel.

May 1679, Drumclog. Drumclog A group of Covenanters defeated a force led by John Graham of Claverhouse.

June 22, 1679 Bothwell Bridge. A force of Covenanters who had occupied Glasgow was defeated in battle by an army led by the Duke of Monmouth.

July 27, 1689 Killiecrankie. John Graham of Claverhouse
(Bonnie Dundee) led the Jacobite army to victory against General Mackay’s army. Claverhouse was
killed in battle.

February 12, 1692 Glencoe. A group of Campbells, led by
Campbell of Glenlyon and acting on a royal warrant, attacked their hosts, the Macdonalds of Glencoe, while they slept. More than forty of the Macdonald clan were killed.

November 13, 1715 Sheriffmuir The Jacobite army, led by the Earl of Mar (‘Bobbing John’), engaged in battle with government troops led by the Duke of Argyll. Both
sides claimed victory.

September 12, 1745 Presronpans. Charles Edward Stewart led the Jacobites to victory against Sir
John Cope’s army.

January 17, 1746 Falkirk. The Jacobite army led by Bonnie
Prince Charlie defeated the government army under the
command of Lieutenant General Hawley.

April18, 1746 Culloden Moor. Thejacobites under Bonnie Prince Charlie were defeated by the army of the Duke of Cumberland. Bonnie Prince Charlie was forced into flight.
