Ian (m) Also lain, which is the more ‘correct’ Gaelic
form of John. There was no sign of Ian or lain in the
Scottish Registrar General’s Report of 1858, but by 1935
Ian/lain was the 10th most frequently used name in Scot land. In 1958 Ian was in 8th place, lain in 29th. Both
forms have continued to be much used by Scottish
parents in the late 1970’s, with lain occurring almost
as frequently as Ian. lain may well become the distinctive
Scottish form of a name that will be used throughout
the rest of the English-speaking world as Ian. The shorter
form is already used in great numbers in England, Canada
and Australia.
