(m) A popular Norman name, ‘noble and
knightly’ as Charlotte Yonge described it. It occurs in
various clan histories, e.g., Humphrey de Kilpatrick was
the founder of the family of Goiquhoun. It is now little used.
The original meaning of the name is obscure, though the second
element is ‘peace.’ The Orkney and Shetland surname
Umphray or Umphrey derives from it. Humphray is also found. Early
Scots forms of the Christian name include Umfried, Umfra and Aumfray.
