The
Sabbath
The
Highlanders were long noted for their strict
observance of the Sabbath. On one occasion, a
professor of geology who was spending a holiday in
Ross-shire, was rambling along the road one Sunday
afternoon looking for specimens and stepping aside now and again
to pick up a stone and break it with his little hammer. A venerable
white-haired crofter, who was on his way to church, observed him
as he was passing, stopped for a moment, and said solemnly,
“Gentleman,
you are breaking more than just stones.”
