Fire
In
the days of the Rebellion, a Highland lady, whose husband was
acting as deputy-keeper of Linlithgow Palace, remonstrated with
General Hawley, who shortly
before had been routed at Falkirk, on the danger likely to result
from the large fires kindled by his men in the immediate vicinity
of the Palace. The General rudely answered that he did not care
though the Palace was burned to the ground.
“
Since that be the case,” said the Lady, “ be aware
that I can run away from fire as fast as yourself.”
