Henry
(m) Gaelic Eanruig. A Germanic name composed of elements which
mean ‘house’ and ‘ruler.’ It was very
popular throughout Britain and North America in the
nineteenth century, eventually going out of fashion in
England and Wales by. The name survived in Scotland
until the early 1960’s. It was 17th most frequently used
name in 1935, 49th in 1958. A count of names given to
children born in Scotland in 1975 shows that it is now
very rarely used. Some of the surnames that derive from
the name, Henderson, Hendry, etc., are used occasionally as Christian
names. The feminine form of the name is Henrietta.
