Hector (m) This famous Greek name probably means
‘prop’ or ‘stay.’ It was first used in Scotland as a sub-
stitute, or anglicisation, of the Gaelic Eachd(h)onn, later
Eachann. Hector was actually the 68th most frequently
used name in Scotland in 1935, which put it above more
obviously Scottish names such as Hamish, Ewen, Finlay,
Bruce, Dugald, etc.
