Grant

Grant
(m) Grant was a well-known Norman nickname
for someone who was ‘tall.’ As a surname Grant has
been
established in Scotland at least since 1263, when Sir
Laurence Grant was Sheriff of Inverness. The use of Grant as a
Christian name, however, is much more modern, and seems to have
begun in North America. In Canada, for example, it was certainly
more densely used in the 1950’s than in Scotland itself.
American usage of the Christian name, never very intensive, may
have begun in honour of President Ulysses Grant (1822-85). In
the late 1970’s Grant had been used quietly by Scottish
parents.
