Tour
Scotland, Glen Shiel
Glen
Shiel runs for 10 miles from Loch Duich to Glen Cluanie with impressively
beautiful mountain scenery on either side. Peaks to the north
include the Five Sisters of Kintail while on the other side of
the glen there are such 3000 footers as the Saddle, Sgurr na Sgine,
Creag nan Damh and Sgurr an Lochain. The glen, which forms part
of the ancient ‘Road to the Isles’, has witnessed
over the
centuries many historic events, including incidents concerned
with the Jacobite rebellions of 1715 and 1745, and Boswell’s
famous journey with Dr. Samuel Johnson in 1773. It was along this
route also that the drovers took their cattle to the markets of
the south, some of the animals having swum the narrows from the
Isle of Skye to the mainland.
