Gail (f) Also Gael, Gale, Gayle. This name is more
American than British, but it was the 76th most frequently used name in Scotland in 1958, and it was clearly being well used in the late 1970’s. It is a short form of Abigail, a Hebrew name meaning ‘father rejoiced.’ Abigail itself is showing signs of replacing Gail in England and Wales.
