air Bheag means 'little by little', and that is just how the
five sections of this site from the BBC gives a taste of Scottish
Gaelic for absolute beginners. Included is a Phrase Book with
audio.
The
Royal
National Mod is Scotland's premier Gaelic festival of the
Gaelic language, arts and culture and is held annually in October
at a different location in Scotland. The Mod is a competition-based
festival which celebrates the Gaelic language and culture through
music, dance, drama, arts and literature.
Comann
nam Parant. This is a national organisation for the parents
of children who are taught in Gaelic. Their Web site supplies
news about the organisation and information on Gaelic education.
It also has a message board to allow parents to communicate with
one another. A "Babyzone" site has a massive list of
Gaelic boys' names and girls' names with both translation and
pronunciation and another page of More Gaelic Names. There is
an English to Gaelic Primer of Plant Names arranged alphabetically
by the common (English) names of plants, and giving both the scientific
(Latin) name and the Gaelic equivalent of each.
Slighe
nan Gaidheal, Seattle. This is Seattle's Gaelic Language and
Cultural Society and the site has details of their biennial festival
and ongoing activities, such as a Gaelic choir, weekly classes,
monthly activity days and ceilidhs.
Pròiseact
Thiriodh. A pilot project to test technologies and give access
to over 600 audio tracks of Gaelic, to develop and demonstrate
technologies for providing access to an online, searchable database
of audio recordings made over the previous 40 years on the island
of Tiree.
Gaelic
& Scottish Connections. A large Gaelic related site where
you can shop for Scottish and Gaelic related gifts, plus a wealth
of information about Gaelic and Scottish related subjects - language,
culture, history, and education, Gaelic Learning Aids, including
videos, CD-ROMs and audio cassettes, and you can order your Gaelic
books from the on-line Gaelic Bookstore. Gael Talk is a Gaelic
Chat Room and there is an online Gaelic - English Dictionary and
a Gaelic Translation Service for either small, or larger documents.
Gaelic
Literature. A history of literature, both oral and written,
in the Gaelic languages of Ireland and Scotland. Before the development
of a distinct Scottish Gaelic language in the 15th century, the
literature of both countries may be considered as one. Ranges
from the earliest times in the 5/8th centuries to the 20th century.
