Fraserburgh
This
major 19th-century herring port still has its fishing fleet and
fish market. The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses evokes the history
of the 'northern lighthouses' the first of which (1787) was built
on the top floor of an old tower-house, Kinnaird Castle, on nearby
Kinnaird Head. The mysterious 16th-century Wine Tower is decorated
with coats of arms in bas-relief. The Fraserburgh Heritage Centre
has an exhibition devoted to Thomas Glover '(1838-1911), who created
the modern Japanese Navy and inspired Puccini's hero in Madame
Butterfly.
