Francis
Francis
(m) From the Latin Franciscus, ‘a Frenchman.’
This name was made generally known by St Francis of
Assisi (c. 1182-1226), whose real name was John. In
England and Wales Francis was most used in the nine-
teenth century. In Scotland it was ranked 25th in 1858,
i6th in 1935, 34th in 1958. It has subsequently dropped
out of favour, but even so, Francis (and Frank used
as an independent name) has been used more intensively
in Scotland this century than in any other English-
speaking country.
