Sueno's
Stone
This
sculptured stone stands on the outskirts of Forres, close to the
Findhorn road. Another legacy of the mystery-shrouded Picts, this
2Oft-high sandstone cross slab (now protected by glass) is superbly
carved on all sides and dates in all probability from the 9th
Century. The purpose of this stone, which has no parallel in Scotland,
remains uncertain. Three sides including the one with the wheel
cross are decorative. The fourth, the most spectacular, is narrative,
depicting from top to bottom horsemen, armed warriors and headless
corpses. The theory is that this outstanding piece of ancient
craftsmanship represents a commemorative monument for some important
historic event, probably a battle.
