Emily (f) This is derived from the Roman clan name
Aemilius, through its feminine form Aemilia. Amelia
looks as if it should be the same name, and was often
thought to be so in earlier times, but it derives from a
Germanic name of uncertain origin. Aemilius was possibly
an ‘emulator,’ or ‘one who strives to equal or rival.’ Emily
was used to some extent in Scotland in the nineteenth century, but it has been out of fashion for some time. It is one of the ‘old’ names, however, which has been restored to use in many English-speaking countries.
