Elliot
Elliot
(m) A Border surname occasionally used in Scot-
land as a Christian name. Black (Surnames of Scotland)
seems to confuse it with an Old English personal name
Aetheiweard, which became the surname Aylward. Elliot
(also in the forms Eliot, Eliott, Elliott) is more likely
to be a diminutive of Eli, itself a shortening of Elijah or
Elias. Elias developed into Ellis, which also occurs oc-
casionally as a Christian name in Scotland for girls as well
as boys.
